La La and Carmelo Anthony: Love + Learn

La La and Carmelo’s separation is a surprise to just about everyone. This is a seemingly happy couple that has been together for over 14 years, who is now separating and possibly divorcing. They are proof that what you see on the surface may not always be the truth, but what is most shocking about the split is the alleged reason.

Media reports have stated that La La is separating from Carmelo due to a possible trade from the NY Nicks, but as we’ve seen on her VH1 show, “La La’s Full Court Life,” La La had no problem with relocating for her man. This leads me to believe that there is a more significant reason for this separation than they are publicizing.

Secondary reports allege that Carmelo cheated on La La with a social worker who is now carrying his baby, but no matter the reason, this is going to have a significant impact on any future they hope to have.

For a couple like La La and Carmelo, who have been together for more than a decade, this break-up cannot be easy. New things to consider would include, how to transition from married to divorced financially, mentally and physically; how to balance work-life with their new separated status and what that truly means for reconciliation; how to co-parent their 10-year-old son Kiyan amicably and how to repair their relationship, if it is repairable.

My hope is that La La and Carmelo will take their time and evaluate all options before making a decision to divorce. This includes seeking counseling, speaking with friends and family, and of course considering how this will impact their son.

This separation is a significant change to their normal, and we would be wise to provide them with the privacy and empathy they need and deserve as this time.
